Nunia Abshire Duhon

Abbeville—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 26, 2020 at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church honoring the life of Nunia Abshire Duhon, 77, of Kaplan LA, passed away on June 23, 2020 in the town of Abbeville LA.

She will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Fr. François Sainte-Marie officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Rickey Duhon, Chad Duhon, David Thompson, Ray Duhon Jr., Brandon Dartez, Ryan Thompson, Colby Duhon, Christopher Duhon, and Gavin Duhon.

Nunia was born in Kaplan, LA to Columb Abshire and Francois Duveau on March, 14th, 1943.

While working as a meter maid, as a mother of four, Nunia graduated from LSU to pursue a career in Law Enforcement. Nunia, the strong and determined woman that she was, rose to the rank of Police Lieutenant of Abbeville City Police Dept before retiring. During her 26 years of service, she was employed as the first woman on the police force in Abbeville, was awarded Outstanding Officer Award, was elected to the Municipal and State Civil Service Board, and became the first woman president of the Police Local Association in the nation.

Nunia is survived by her husband, Ernest Koppie; her only daughter, Tammy Thompson; her two sons, Rickey Duhon and Chad Duhon; fourteen grandchildren; and more than twenty-five great grandchildren.

Nunia was preceded in death by her first husband, Lenix Duhon Jr. and her first born son, Ray Duhon Sr.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles St., on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM; Friday, June 26, 2020 from 8:00 AM until 2:45 PM when the procession will depart for the church.

The family of Nunia Duhon wishes to extend a sincere thanks to Ernest Koppie, Grace Hospice, Kristen Molbert, and the family who surrounded Nunia with so much love as she left this Earth to return home to Heaven.
