Abbeville- Robert Joseph Touchet, a devoted husband, father, friend, and servant-hearted member of his community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, at the age of 69, due to complications from a fall. Born in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1955 to the late Louis J. Touchet and Fuki Hori Touchet, Robert lived a life marked by kindness, friendliness, light-hearted mischief, and a deep love for family.
Robert never met a stranger. His warmth, easy conversation, and genuine care for others created instant connections wherever he went. His quick wit and easy laughter were a gift to all who knew him. Though he came to personal faith later in life, that transformation became central to who he was—his light shone brightly as he encouraged others to find hope and meaning, often inviting them to church with open arms and an open heart.
A deeply involved member of Abbeville United Methodist Church, Robert served faithfully as a board member, choir member, and bell ringer. His love for worship and music was evident in the joyful way he participated in church life. He was a steadfast presence and a gentle encourager, always ready to lend a helping hand or speak a kind word.
Robert was also an avid sports enthusiast, with an enduring passion for football and a lifelong loyalty to his teams—the Rams, the Lakers, and the Dodgers. Cheering from his favorite chair at home, his enthusiasm was infectious and unwavering.
He was a loving and devoted husband to Ruth, with whom he shared a beautiful life rooted in love, partnership, and mutual respect. Robert was also a proud and caring father to his stepchildren and grandchildren, embracing them as his own and supporting them with steadfast love.
Robert lived with intention and integrity, leaving behind a community enriched by his presence and a family deeply blessed by his love.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Bailey Touchet of Abbeville, his brother, John Touchet (Marnie) of Butler, AL, his brother-in-law, Thomas Bailey, Sr., and sister-in-law, Tina Haney-Bailey. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Caleb Martin; Charles and Crystal Martin; and Laura Faught. He leaves behind his grandchildren: Christian, Canaan, Eden, Lincoln, and Quinn; as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Mark Bailey.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at Abbeville United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 3, at 3:00 PM, with Rev. Cynthia L. Luquette officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in Robert’s memory to the ministries of Abbeville United Methodist Church.
May his memory be a comfort, and his light continue to shine through those he touched.
