Velma "Sally" L. Hebert

October 16, 1925 — December 19, 2020

Gueydan—Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January  8, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Gueydan honoring the life of Velma L. “Sally” Hebert, 95, who died Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Gueydan Memorial Guest Home.  She will be laid to rest at Gueydan Cemetery.

Velma, known to family and friends as “Sally” was born on October 16, 1925, in Gueydan to the late Gradie L. and Zema Leger Humble, also of Gueydan.  She graduated from Gueydan High School in 1942 and then attended Spencer Business College in Lake Charles, LA.  Following school, she lived in Lake Charles and worked at the Firestone Rubber Plant during WWII.  In 1948, she married Virgil L. Hebert of Lake Charles.  They settled in Gueydan and raised a family of eight children.  After her children were grown, Sally worked for several years at Boatner Lumber Yard in Gueydan as an office manager.  Sally was a devout Christian and lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Gueydan, where she taught Sunday school until age 90 and played the organ, after teaching herself to play.   Sensing a need in the community, Sally conceived the idea for, and donated the funds, to build the First Baptist Thrift Shop, which has provided disaster relief to Gueydan residents following recent hurricanes.

She is survived by her eight children, Virgil L. Hebert, Linda H. Dailey, David L. Hebert, Randall Hebert, Glenn A. Hebert, Janice H. Louvierre, Jody M. Hebert and Kendall Hebert; her four grandchildren, Medora L. Richard, Laura Louvierre, Jade Hebert and Rory Hebert; her 11 great grandchildren; and her sister, Doris M. Humble “Bootsy” of Raleigh, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gradie L. Humble and the former Zema Leger; and her sister, Margaret E. Lantz.
