Gueydan—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Virgie Ann Bertrand Stelly, 91, who passed away peacefully leaving behind a lifetime of loving memories and a legacy of care and devotion to her family. She will be laid to rest at Gueydan Cemetery with Reverend Corey Campeaux officiating the services.
She was born November 22, 1931, in Gueydan, Louisiana, to Oledia and Dunice Bertrand and lived her entire life there, raising her three sons and supporting them and their families in every way she could. She was a proud farm wife and took her role seriously, preparing food to bring to the men in the field, driving to get parts for repairs on machinery and helping her husband, Rodney with his record keeping. She was an avid supporter of St. Peter's Catholic school, where her three "boys" attended, volunteering to work at the annual bazaars, selling for fundraisers and even substituting in classrooms. She loved her community all her life and couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
She was a devoted caregiver all her adult life and loved taking care of her children, nieces and nephews and grandchildren. In later years she was especially devoted to the care of Rodney, her mother and her mother-in-law.
She is survived by her sons, Randy (Cindy) Stelly of Lake Charles and Hal Stelly of Kaplan; her grandchildren, Ida Stelly of Kaplan, Rebecca and Eli Stelly of Lake Charles, Cole Stelly of Lafayette, Kate (Logan) Perry and Joshua (Candy) Labove of Sulphur; her great grandchildren, Jayden Labove of Lake Charles, Lizzy and Dalton Labove of Sulphur, and Brooks and John Luke Perry of Lake Charles; her sister, Agnes "Maggie" Lemaire of Lafayette; her sister-in-law, Marion Berry of Lafayette; and her lifelong friend, Margie Humble of Gueydan.. S
he was preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lena and Joseph Stelly; her husband, Rodney Stelly; her son, Rodney "Rod" Stelly, Jr.; her brother, Neelis Bertrand and his wife, Fay; and her brothers-in-law, Logan Lemaire and George Berry.
The family extends sincere appreciation to Dr. Danielle Fuselier for the compassionate and gentle care she provided Virgie, also Lena Trahan, Jackie Richard, and Brenda LeBouef for their valuable in-home assistance.
