Wilfred is better known to his friends as “Lulu” or “Wilfred, Jr.” and to those who loved him most as “Papee”. He was born August 6, 1936 to Wilfred “Lulu” Broussard, Sr and Joyce Broussard of Gueydan. He graduated from Gueydan High School in 1954. After graduating, he attended Louisiana State University for two years before he enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country for three years. After completing his time in the service, he married Shirley Klein in 1958. Together they built their life in Gueydan where he made a living as a rice farmer and a cattleman until the early 90’s. They raised two children, Robert and Carol, who gave them five grandchildren who renamed the couple to “Papee and Gan Gan”. As a young couple, Wilfred and Shirley enjoyed raising their family but also enjoyed spending their time traveling around the country as well as overseas to places like Belgium and France. In his young years as a grandfather, some of his most cherished memories were times spent with his grandchildren at livestock shows around the state. He never missed an opportunity to attend any Grandparents Day event, Veteran’s Day event, graduation, or Christmas play in which his grandchildren or great-grandchildren participated. He was a devout Catholic who crossed Main Street every Sunday morning to attend mass at St. Peter Catholic Church and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Throughout his life he enjoyed playing cards, watching western movies, watching any type of sporting event and babysitting his great grandchildren. He was known for his quick wit, hunting experiences at Lulu’s Hunting Club, and his fresh cut okra. Wilfred never spoke to anyone without calling them “sha” and never passed up the opportunity to tell anyone a good story from the past.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Klein Broussard; one son, Robert Broussard and his wife, Sheryl of Gueydan; one daughter, Carol Broussard Plaisance and her husband, Steven of Gueydan; five grandchildren, Jerrod Broussard, and his wife, K’Rees of Gueydan, Casey Broussard, Ryan Broussard and his wife, Ginny of Hathaway, Paige Brousard of Gueydan and Christie Broussard of Gueydan; six great grandchildren, Lillie Broussard, Kaisyn Broussard, Ada Broussard, John Logan Broussard, Colt Broussard and Cord Broussard.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wilfred “Lulu” Broussard, Sr. and Joyce Broussard; his godfather, Robert Paul Francez; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, George Klein and Lenia Bertrand Klein; two sisters-in-law, Henrietta Klein and Betty Kelin LaPoint; and four brothers-in-law, Francis Klein, Wilber “Pete” Klein, Robert “Bob” Klein and George “Jim” Klein.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Gueydan, 311 Fourth St., on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 9:00 AM until the procession departs for the church at 1:45 PM with a rosary being prayed at 11:00 AM.
